Hello, Gef Tom Son here, Looking back over my life there is one recurring theme, that of design. Even as a young Yorkshire lad I used to be involved in school plays, “costume and glitter”. After leaving college I was employed at Buckingham Palace as a footman in the Royal Household, followed by a period in New York working for the founder of the Santa Fe Opera. I was drawn, like a moth to a flame, to jobs where I had access to wonderful works of art and people who loved to party and dress up socially. In the 1980’s London, before the days of the restaurant explosion, everyone entertained at home and there were lots of fancy dress balls. Required for these were costumes, jewellery, as well as hats for Ascot, wedding outfits etc. I first started designing jewellery as fantasy pieces to complement the costume I had designed and made. Nowadays my designs are much simpler to create; I let the stones speak for themselves in simple settings. I have won garden awards in my varied career. I now say to people that designing a necklace is similar to creating a flower border in the garden; it must work to please the eye, or like a platter of fabulously coloured canapés that makes the mouth water. Many stones are named after food and flowers; e.g. Citrine (lemon in French), Peridot is also known as Olivine – the colour of the stone resembles olives, Rose Quartz is self explanatory! Recently I found a Jasper, which has spots like the dog, referred to as Dalmatian Jasper. I do hope you enjoy the pieces I have designed and created. I put a lot of love and care into each of them. I hope they impress all who see them and enhance all who wear them. |
